A spring cleaning guide for Perth homes and workplaces

A practical spring cleaning guide for Perth, room by room and outside, with tips for workplaces getting ready for summer.

Spring in Perth is short and sweet. One week you've got the heater on, the next the doors are open and the flies have found you. It's the perfect window to give your home or workplace a proper reset before summer settles in.

Here's a practical spring cleaning guide from our team, with tips for both homes and businesses around Malaga and Wangara.

Before you start: declutter

Cleaning is twice as fast when there's less stuff in the way. Before you pick up a cloth, do a quick sweep through each room and pull out anything you don't use. Donate, recycle or bin it. In the office, clear old paperwork, dead stationery and that pile of boxes in the corner that's been there since last spring.

Then work top to bottom, and dry before wet: dust first, then wipe, then vacuum, then mop. That way you're not knocking dust onto a floor you've already cleaned.

Kitchen

  • Empty, wipe and reorganise the pantry, checking use-by dates
  • Clean the fridge inside, including shelves and seals
  • Degrease the rangehood and wash or replace filters
  • Clean the oven and cooktop
  • Wipe the splashback, cupboard doors and handles
  • Descale the kettle and clean the dishwasher filter

If your splashback is tiled and the grout is past saving, it might be time to think about a glass splashback, which is far quicker to wipe clean.

Bathrooms

  • Scrub grout and tiles, shower screens and tapware
  • Wash or replace shower curtains and bath mats
  • Clear out expired products from cabinets
  • Clean exhaust fans, which are easy to forget and collect a lot of dust

Living areas and bedrooms

  • Dust ceiling fans before you need them running all summer
  • Wash curtains or vacuum blinds
  • Vacuum under and behind furniture
  • Wipe skirting boards, door frames and light switches
  • Flip or rotate mattresses where suitable, and wash pillows and doonas as per their labels
  • Clean the inside of windows and the window tracks

Air conditioning

Before the first hot week, clean or check the filters on split systems and evaporative units following the manufacturer's instructions, or book a technician for servicing. A unit full of dust works harder.

Outside

Spring is a great time to tackle outdoor areas before summer entertaining:

  • Sweep and wash patios and alfresco areas
  • Clean outdoor furniture
  • Clear gutters, if it's safe to do so, before bushfire season
  • Pressure clean driveways, paths and pool surrounds to remove winter mould and grime

Winter rain usually leaves shaded paths with a slippery black or green film. A pressure clean lifts it and brightens the whole front of the house.

For workplaces

Businesses benefit from a spring reset as much as homes do. A few ideas:

  • Book a deep clean of the staff kitchen, fridge and microwave
  • Clean carpets or have high-traffic areas spot cleaned
  • Dust vents, high ledges, light fittings and blinds
  • Pressure clean entries, car parks, loading areas and warehouse floors
  • Clean glass doors, partitions and windows
  • Clear out storage rooms and archive boxes

If your regular cleaning covers the basics, spring is a good time to add a one-off deeper task on top. For our commercial clients, that's often a warehouse pressure clean or high dusting.

Keep it going

The best spring clean is the one you don't have to repeat from scratch next year. A few habits help:

  • Wipe kitchen benches and the stovetop daily
  • Run a quick bathroom wipe-down weekly
  • Deal with spills and stains straight away
  • Book outdoor pressure cleaning once a year
  • For workplaces, set up a regular cleaning schedule so it never builds up
