NDIS cleaning support for self-managed and plan-managed participants

How self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants can arrange home cleaning support, what to look for in a cleaner, and how Hightym works with participants in Malaga and Wangara.

Published 21 October 2026 · by the Hightym team

For many NDIS participants, keeping on top of household cleaning can be one of the harder parts of everyday life. Having support with it can free up time and energy for the things that matter more to you.

If you're self-managed or plan-managed, you have more choice about who provides your supports. This post explains, in plain terms, how cleaning support can work and what to look for. It's general information, not advice about your plan. For what's funded in your plan, always check with the NDIA, your plan manager or your support coordinator.

Please note: Hightym is not a registered NDIS provider. We work with participants who are self-managed or plan-managed.

Self-managed vs plan-managed vs NDIA-managed

There are three main ways NDIS funding can be managed:

  • NDIA-managed (agency-managed): the NDIA pays providers directly, and participants generally need to use registered providers.
  • Plan-managed: a plan manager pays providers on your behalf. Plan-managed participants can generally use registered or unregistered providers.
  • Self-managed: you manage your own funding and pay providers yourself, then claim from the NDIS. You can generally use registered or unregistered providers.

Because we're not a registered provider, we can only work with participants who are self-managed or plan-managed.

Is cleaning covered in my plan?

Household tasks, including cleaning, can be funded in some plans where they relate to your disability support needs. Whether it's included, and how much, depends on your individual plan. We can't tell you what your plan covers, so check with your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA before booking.

What cleaning support can include

Every home and every person is different. Common tasks include:

  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Cleaning the kitchen, benches and appliances
  • Cleaning bathrooms and toilets
  • Dusting and wiping surfaces
  • Changing bed linen
  • Emptying bins
  • Occasional extra jobs, like cleaning windows or pressure cleaning paths and driveways

We'll agree on a routine that suits you, including what gets done, how often, and anything you'd like us to avoid or do in a particular way.

What to look for in a cleaner

Whoever you choose, a few things are worth checking:

  • Clear communication. You should know who's coming, when, and what's included.
  • Respect for your home and routine. Your home, your way.
  • Reliability. Turning up when they say they will makes a real difference.
  • Clear invoicing. Invoices should show the provider's business details, the date and description of the service, and your NDIS participant number, so your plan manager can process them or you can claim them.
  • Flexibility. Needs change. A good cleaner will adjust the routine when you need it.

How it works with us

  1. Get in touch. Call us on 0439 659 127 or send a quote request. Let us know you're an NDIS participant and whether you're self-managed or plan-managed.
  2. Chat about your needs. We'll talk about what you'd like done, how often, and any preferences.
  3. Agree a routine. We'll confirm the tasks and timing in writing.
  4. We clean. Same routine each visit, adjusted whenever you need.
  5. Invoicing. We can invoice you directly or your plan manager, with your participant number on each invoice.

Questions people often ask us

Will the same cleaner come each time? We aim for consistency wherever we can, because familiarity matters. If that ever needs to change, we'll let you know ahead of time.

Do I need to be home? That's up to you. Some people like to be there; others prefer to arrange access. We'll work with whatever makes you comfortable.

Can I change the routine later? Of course. Just tell us, and we'll update what we do and confirm it with you.

Can a family member or support coordinator contact you for me? Yes, with your permission we're happy to talk with whoever helps you organise your supports.
